Aaron founded Aaron Katz Law LLC in October 2022 to provide his clients more personalized care and attention, as well as more efficient representation, than they could obtain at bigger firms. Aaron knows the immense power that government prosecutors wield, how disruptive a government investigation can be to a person’s life and business, and the fear and anxiety that criminal charges or a government complaint induce. Aaron Katz Law LLC’s singular purpose is to ensure that, in any litigation against the government, our clients’ rights are protected and they receive the vindication they deserve.
Since 2004, Aaron has proven himself to be a rising star in the white collar criminal defense and False Claims Act bars. He has compiled a string of notable victories in high-stakes matters, including several successful defenses of clients at high-profile federal criminal jury trials. He is recognized by Chambers USA, Benchmark Litigation, Best Lawyers in America, and Super Lawyers for his excellence in investigations, white collar criminal defense, False Claims Act litigation, and appeals. He is an Adjunct Professor of Trial Advocacy at Boston University School of Law.
Aaron spent the first 18 years of his legal career at Ropes & Gray LLP, one of the world’s preeminent law firms. In 2013, Aaron was promoted to equity partner in Ropes & Gray’s prestigious Government Enforcement Practice Group—the youngest lawyer ever to be promoted to that position. Forbes Magazine has said that Aaron’s clients are "fortunate to have Aaron" on their sides and that Aaron’s criminal trial success "offers hope in the jury system." Chambers USA writes that "Aaron is a fantastic lawyer."Aaron’s clients have praised him for “fighting tirelessly” and “never giving up.”
Aaron has represented publicly-traded Fortune 500 companies, privately-held businesses, private equity investors, corporate directors and officers, company executives and employees, and entrepreneurs under government investigation or indictment. Aaron’s clients span numerous industries—including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, hospital and nursing home care, healthcare technology, information technology, commercial real estate, securities, commodities, entertainment, sports gaming, and consumer products. His work is national in scope and has involved some of the country’s highest-profile white collar criminal matters, including his successful defense of a BP engineer charged by the Department of Justice in connection with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and his representation of a parent in the “Varsity Blues” college admissions scandal. Aaron’s most recent federal criminal trial was one of a handful of white collar criminal jury trials held during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the jury acquitted his client of the most serious charge against him (conspiracy to commit wire fraud).
Aaron maintains a significant pro bono practice and was named Ropes & Gray’s “Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year” in 2021. His representations of death row inmates in Alabama in collaboration with The Equal Justice Initiative have received national press attention. His representation of sex trafficking victims in groundbreaking civil lawsuits against the website operator Backpage.com was featured in the documentary “I Am Jane Doe,” narrated by Jessica Chastain.
Aaron graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review and was an oralist for the winning team of the 2002-03 Ames Moot Court Competition. He was a teaching assistant to Professor Stephen Burbank and later clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit for the Honorable Reena Raggi. Aaron received his undergraduate degree from the University of San Francisco, graduating summa cum laude and being named Valedictorian. During his freshman and sophomore years at USF, Aaron was a member of the school’s NCAA Division I Men’s Golf team.
Aaron was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona and now lives with his family in Winchester, Massachusetts. He is an active member of the Winchester community, coaching youth basketball and baseball over the past several years.
